Adulting, Part One

When I was a child, I remember being told to enjoy being young. Then I got to college and I was told the same thing.

“Don’t be in a rush to grow up,” they said. “Enjoy having less responsibility.”

I always rolled my eyes, thinking “less responsibility? You call hours and hours of homework ‘less responsibility??’ ” Little did I know how right the grownups were. Because now I’m one of them. I’m…. an adult. And all of a sudden I’ve got real responsibilities.

Yeah. Crazy, right? Oh, how time flies. But being an adult is not all bad. Like anything else, it has its pros and cons. That’s right, I just used the phrase “pros and cons.” If that’s not an indicator of my adultness, I don’t know what is.

Young Adulting

Pros Cons
Independence Paying bills
Eating ice cream for breakfast Gaining weight because you’re eating crap food
Having a solid job Working 40 hours a week
Going out with friends whenever you want Friends moving away
Spending your money however you choose Making car payments
Higher education opportunities Student loan debt
Decorating your own home Moving around a lot
Setting your own schedule Learning to budget
Paid vacation time Having to always make the responsible choice
Being in charge of your own health care Having to actually remember to make doctor appointments

Truth is, I don’t think any of us really know how to be real adults. We just do our best to keep moving forward in a positive way. I love talking with elderly people and asking them for advice on life. They help me remember that I’m only 24. I don’t have to have it all together all the time. I just need to work hard, enjoy life, and the rest will come with time.

P.S. I’m sure there are many more things I can add to my pros and cons list, and I welcome your ideas. Comment below!

Ah there you are! I was going to (growingupmeredith.wordpress.com) I have a Canon 70D… still have a lot to learn on it but I’ve been wanting to dive into photography for YEARS. Nice to finally take the plunge!

PS. I feel you on the pros and cons of being an adult. LOVE my independence… do not love paying bills. 😛

Right? Haha it’s definitely been hard adjusting to that part of adulthood. And in the last month, two of my best friends have moved away. That’s what inspired the post. I’m planning a series 🙂 Good luck with the camera! They are complicated little buggers, but a very cool tool for expression and making memories.
